Objective: the study aims to find out the association of
some risk factors with nutritional status of children under five in two
villages in Caibe district, Tiengiang province in the area of Mekong
river. One village often suffered by flooding and one village rarely had
flooding.
Methods: A cross sectional study for the whole population of
children under five and mothers of children under two in two villages
was established. Household KAP interviews using structured questionnaire
have been conducted. Measure weight and height of all children.
Results: In two villages, the percentage of undernourished children was
still high (21.24%). Simultaneously, obesity in children under five
(1.7%) emerged as a new health issue. We investigated these risk
factors: educational status of fathers and mothers; practice in feeding
(giving the child fluid during 24 hours after birth, feeding the child
when it got diarrheae); starvation of families; knowledge on growth
chart; time of first feeding the baby with supplementary food, time of
weaning. There are no statistic significant association of those risk
factors with nutritional status of children under five between the two
villages.
Recommendation: Strengthen IEC activities to reduce
undernourished rate and to prevent the increasing of obesity in rural
community is needed for the community.
