Abstract

* Ho Chi Minh City Journal of Medicine* Supplement of Vol. 23 - No. 6 - 2019: 01 - 08

Osteoporosis is a global issue. According to WHO, osteoporosis is an endocrine disorder of the skeletal system, in which the density of bone is reduced and the micro structure of bone is damaged, hence the bones are more fragile and the risk of fracture is greatly increased. Osteoporosis, therefore, reduces quality of life, increases treatment cost as it becomes a burden for society. Risk factors for osteoporosis in men and women includes: low body mass index, family history of osteoporosis, alcohol abuse, insufficient exercise, menopause, drug abuse such as glucocorticoid, phenobarbital, phenytoin… Osteoporosis is diagnosed with Bone Mineral Density test using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry technology. Treatment are varied, depending on patients status. Biphosphonate is one of the first line medicine. Other usually prescribed medicine includes calcitonin, parathyroid hormone derivative such as teriparatide, selective estrogen receptor modulator such as raloxifene, lasofoxifene, basedoxifene, calcium and vitamin D. Currently, monoclonal antibody drug like denosumab and romosozumab are effective in inhibition of RANKL yet expensive. As there are many adverse reactions, osteoporosis medicine havs to be prescribed by doctors. The most suitable ways to prevent osteoporosis are participating in high physical activities and having a rich calcium intake.
