Introduction: One of the first reports of hyperthyroid bone
disease was described the "worm eaten" appearance of the long bones
of a young woman who died from hyperthyroidismin 1891. Thyrotoxicosis, a
clinical syndrome characterized by manifestations of excess thyroid hormone, is
one of the commonly-recognised conditions of the thyroid gland. Thyrotoxicosis
causes acceleration of bone remodeling;therefore it is one of the known risk
factors for osteoporosis. Studies showed that thyroid hormones have effects on
bone, both in vitroand in vivo. Bone density measurements have proved that bone
loss is common in patients with hyperthyroidism and there is an improvement of
BMD after treatment. In
Aim: To evaluate the changing of femural and lumbar BMD
before and after one-year treatment of hyperthyroid patients at Cho Ray
hospital.
Method: Cohort studyin 122 continuously treated
hyperthyroid patients for 12 months. BMD was measured by DXA.
Result: LumbarBMDs before and after 12th month of treatment were 0.891g/cm2 and 0.935g/cm2.
FemuralBMDs before and after 12th
month of treatment were 0.779g/cm2 and 0.839g/cm2.
The increase of BMD on treated hyperthyroid patients
wasstatisticallysignificant. However, there was no significant difference
between improvement of femural BMD and lumbar BMD before and after treatment (p
= 0.235).
In
conclusion: Thereweresimilar improvements on femural and lumbar BMD in treated
hyperthyroid patients.
