Background:
Hospital wastewater contains many polluted factors such as: organic
substances, radioactive waste substances and pathogens that affect
directly on environment and human health. In recent years, hospitals
have taken into account the importance of hospital wastewater treatment,
building seperate collection rain and wastewater systems but these
problems still need more attention from other sectors and ministries for
improvement. In 2012, Ministry of Health has been assigned Institute of
Hygiene and Public Health in HCM city to monitor the status of
environment of hospitals in the South of Vietnam and to build programs
of environment protection in health sector.
Objectives: To assess the status of medical wastewater treatment and management in some hospitals in the South of Vietnam.
Methods: A cross - sectional study.
Results:
All of 22 studied hospitals had wastewater treatment system among which
45.45% were good in condition; 45.45% overloaded and 9.1% stopped
operation. Besides that, there were only 3/22 hospitals (13.6%) having
license for discharging wastewater into water sources and 2/20 hospitals
(10%) had test result certificate of wastewater after requirements of
the National technical regulation for hospital wastewater based on QCVN
28:2010/BTNMT.
Conclusion:
Wastewater treatment and management of 22 hospitals still meet many
difficulties. The health sector ought to build suitable policies to help
hospitals in solving medical liquid waste in order to minimize the risk
of environmental pollution caused by hospitals to protect health -
workers and community’s health.
